Gyula von Benczur

Gyula von Benczur - Obrazy 19. století

(Nyiregyhaza 1844–1920)
Portrait of an Officer, signed, dated Benczur Gyula, Budapest 1919,oil on canvas, 74 x 59 cm, framed

Provenance:
Private Collection Germany

The Hungarian painter Gyula Benczur received drawing lessons in his youth in Slovakia and then studied at the Munich Academy, which he himself directed as a professor from 1876. After a few years he returned to his homeland and was appointed director of the new master school in Budapest. Benczur was the most important Hungarian painter of historicism and his works were particularly popular among the aristocracy. He portrayed, among others, Empress Elisabeth of Austria and Count Gyula Andrássy; one of his clients was the Bavarian King Ludwig II.

The present lot shows a proud Hungarian magnate, decorated with medals from World War I. He wears a fur-trimmed overjacket over the attila, the typical uniform coat of the hussars, and seems to look far into the distance. His kolpak, the fur headgear that is part of the uniform, is carried under his arm.
