The Weissenbruch name is synonymous with artistic excellence from the mid-19th century in Holland. Jan Weissenbruch, the painter of the present lot, was the older brother of Isaac and Frederik Hendrick and the cousin of Jan Hendrick Weissenbruch. The three brothers and their cousin studied at the Royal Academy of Art in the Hague. Jan specialized in Dutch town scenes, often shown with contrasts of light and shadow as in the present lot. The scene is bathed in the warm light of late afternoon. His work is rooted in the romantic tradition, but he eventually developed a more impressionist approach. He is one of the founders of the Pulchri studio, a Dutch art society based in The Hague that promotes the Fine arts.
