The present painting by Carlo Grubacs shows one of the iconic views of Venice, which the artist painted on several occasions. The viewpoint is taken from the west, looking towards the Palazzo Ducale, seen on the right, and Santa Maria della Salute on the left distance. The pink hues in the sky suggest a warm afternoon in the lagoon, the figures working and strolling along the Riva casting long, slender shadows. An almost identical version of this composition by the artist, in slightly more muted colours, and as one of a series of four, is conserved in the Museo Civico, Bassano del Grappa.
