Theodor Roos

Theodor Roos - Obrazy starých mistrů

(Wesel 1638–1698?)
Six Sibyls,
The Sibyl Tiburtine and the Sibyl Lybique are signed: Theodorus Roos fecit and TRoos fecit,
oil on canvas, each 82 x 65 cm, framed, a set of six (6)

Provenance:
Guiscard d’Estaing family, Château de Murol en Saint Amant, Auvergne (France) until 2007

The present series of six sibyls is an intriguing work by Theodor Roos, a Rhenish artist who assisted in the Amsterdam workshops of both Barend Graat and Cornelis de Bie. Sybils, originating in pagan Greco-Roman antiquity, were re-interpreted as prophesizing the coming of Christ, and were popular in decorative schemes, notably included in Michelangelo’s frescos in the Sistine Chapel. The current six canvases appear to have been adapted by Roos from designs for engravings by Clause Vignon, published in 1635 (a complete set Douze Sybilles is conserved in the Metropolitan Museum, New York.) Each of Roos’s Sibyls have a scene in miniature depicted below them, showing the relevant prophecy, while Roos has deviated from Vignon’s designs by individualizing the faces of several of the sibyls, rendering them as unique portraits.
