Bete, Ivory Coast, late 19th-early 20th century, wood,24,5 high. Originally these masks were presented when peace was restored after an armed conflict, as a justice mask. At the same time, this type of mask was worn to prepare men for war;
offering protection by instilling fear and terror in potential enemies with their bulging eyes, flaring nostrils and protruding mouth.
