A Tchitcheri Sakab
Moba people, Togo, wood, 75,5 cm high. Made in commission for diviners amongst the Moba, the Tchitcheri figures are one of the most minimalist sculptures in Africa, depicted by a cylindrical trunk flaring arms and legs, surmounted by a round head without eyes, nose or ears. They represent figures of ancestors, literally 'Sakab'. They are planted in the ground, which explains why the lower part is often damaged. The Tchitcheri are individually named after the clan of the ancestors they are supposed to honour.
