Mbulu Ngulu Reliquary Figure
Kota Obamba, Gabon, late 19th-early 20th century, wood, copper, brass, 53,5 cm high. Described in the Encyclopedia Britannica as among the most stylised of all African figures, these figures are recognisable by the metal bands and sheets on a concave or convex wooden head, cylindrical neck, resting on schematically represented arms and 'legs'. These figures would stand on a basket, bound at the figure's lozenge-shaped base. Like a prism, these Mbulu Ngulu could reinforce and concentrate the reliquary's intense power.
