A Large Ngadju Head
Borneo, East Kalimantan, 18th-19th century, ironwood, 93 cm. Known for their strong stylised art, the monumental art from the Ngadju are the easy to recognize. Large posts made from dense ironwood are collectively known as Hampatong- but unlike the other Dayak people, the Ngadju around the Mahakam river, make architectural elements with styliszed ancestral motives. This large anthropomorphic head is a good example of the strong and expressive mastery of the heavy ironwood carvings. The tongue represents the apotropaic function of the figure.
