A small 'Hornbill' Agiba, Papuan Gulf


Papua New Guinea, wood, hornbill skull (not endangered), 47,5 cm high. A small Agiba with a hornbill skull attached. The large Agibas were used for hanging human skulls. Together with its skulls, an Agiba was both a shrine and a source of supernatural power. The display was a status symbol which marked the clan's prowess in warfare and hunting.
