A Yipwon Spirit Figure
Karawari river, Papua New Guinea, wood, 134 cm high. Among the most elegant of 'hook' style figures, in which curved and pointed hooks are arranged on a vertical axis around a central design, the hook figures of the Alamblak speaking people are known as Yipwon. Figures such as this one were owned collectively by clans, representing a patron spirit of warfare and hunting. This anthropomorphic figure has a long crescent-shaped face with bulbous nostrils, close-set eyes and a chin that rests on the highest rung representing the arms.
