Cornelis Dusart

(Haarlem 1660-1704)
An interior with drinking and smoking peasants, pen and brown ink, grey wash, on laid paper, 15,2 x 18,2 cm, numbered "1044." in the lower right corner, browned, tear, mounted, framed, (Sch)

Provenance:
Private property, Österreich.

We are grateful to Dr. Bernhard Schnackenburg for the confirmation of the attribution by means of a high resolution digital photograph and for the scientific support.

The present drawing with peasants celebrating in a tavern is an early work of Cornelis Dusart and may have been executed between 1670 and 1680. Dusart was the last pupil of Adriaen van Ostade and his early works show strong influences of his master. Only in the course of the 1680s Dusart developed an individual and distinctive style. The execution of the drawing with a pointed pen and taut lines, however, are typical for him and his early work. A comparable drawing “Gulfers and jolly peasants near a tavern” is kept in Boston private property (see: (B. Schnackenburg, Adriaen van Ostade, Isack van Ostade, Zeichnungen und Aquarelle, Hamburg 1981, p. 61 und 279, Fig. 73). Other drawings of Dusart’s early career are preserved in the Musée du Louvre in Paris (Inv. F.00.683, F.22806; Schnackenburg 1981, Cat. No. F 207, F 210) and in the Kupferstichkabinett in Berlin (Inv. KdZ 3870; Schnackenburg 1981, Cat. No. F 23).
