(Cologne circa 1610–1646/52)
Portrait of a gentleman inspecting jewellery with his family nearby,
signed and dated upper right: AETATIS. 24. AETATIS. 25./ Anno 1640./ JH (in ligature) F,
oil on canvas, 129 x 185.5 cm, framed

THIS LOT IS PART OF THE RIMPAU-LANGENSTEIN COLLECTION
(please click for further information)

Provenance:

Collection of the Rimpau family, Langenstein Castle

Literature:
L. N. Geurts, Uit de anonimiteit onttrokken: De Meester van het Langenstein-Familieportret [Emerging out of anonymity: The Master of the Langenstein Family Portrait], master thesis, Leuven, 2017–2018

We are grateful to Katlijne Van der Stighelen for confirming the attribution on the basis of a photograph. In the academic year of 2017–18 the latter supervised a master thesis by Lucy Geurts on the present painting. In this thesis she attributes the work to Johannes Hulsman. A plausible identification of the female sitter as a member of the German Reinking family is also suggested by Geurts. A copy of her master thesis in Dutch accompanies the painting.

A comparable painting by the artist was part of the collection at Schloss Marienburg in Germany and since sold with Sotheby’s, 5 October 2005, lot 34. Both this work and the present lot are fine examples of family portraiture placed in a narrative setting.
