Adriatic School, 15th Century
Saint John the Baptist,
tempera and gold on canvas laid down on panel, 33.5 x 21 cm, unframed
The painting depicts Saint John the Baptist in a barren rocky landscape, with the blessing Christ appearing in the upper right corner. Clothed in his robe with long hair and beard and a slender body, carrying a scroll and a cross staff, the hermit is clearly identified. He gestures towards Christ, who turns towards him and shows the close bond between them. The decapitated head in a golden basin at the bottom right anticipates his pending martyrdom.
In contrast to the usually Byzantine depiction of the Saint as an angel in the desert, he is here presented without wings, focusing on the visualisation of hermitage. The present composition is related to a signed panel by Angelos Akotantos (died around 1457 in Crete) conserved in the Byzantine and Christian Museum, Athens (inv. no. BXM 01551), one of the best-known artists of the Veneto-Cretan school and closely linked to the Adriatic School.
