The Holy Family of Francis I,

The Holy Family of Francis I, executed by Raphael in 1518 (207 x 140 cm, Musée du Louvre, Paris, inv. no. 604), was commissioned by Lorenzo de’ Medici on behalf of Pope Leo X and was intended as a diplomatic gift to King Francis I and Queen Claude of France. It is generally thought the narrative content of the Holy Family refers to the Queen, who had recently given birth to a son, Duke Francis of Brittany. The painting was presented to the King in Nantes on 10 August 1518 and was later erected on the altar of the royal chapel built in 1534 at Fontainebleau. The painting is mentioned at Versailles during the reign of Louis XIV, it entered the Louvre in 1793.
