After the demolition of the previous structure in 1819, a new bridge with ashlar piers was built between the inner city and Leopoldstadt. It was named after Crown Prince Ferdinand. For around 90 years, the Ferdinand Bridge spanned the Danube Canal and was an important transport artery between the two banks. At the beginning of the 20th century, it was demolished and replaced by an iron arch bridge, which was renamed Schwedenbrücke in 1920 to commemorate the help provided by the Swedes for Viennese children after the First World War.
