porcelain, lapis caillouté ground with four reserves on the lip and inside rim with polychrome painted bouquets of flowers, gilt edging, diameter 24.8 cm, turner no. 27, underglaze blue Austrian shield, red Russian inventory no., a few minor losses to the gilding, (Hr)
In 1785, the Austrian ambassador to St. Petersburg, Count Ludwig Kobenzl, ordered a service originally comprising 659 pieces for the Russian imperial court as a gift from Joseph II, Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire, Hereditary Duke of Austria, to the Russian heir to the throne, Grand Duke Pavel Petrovich. The service was completed six months after the order was placed. In order to complete this large service in this short period of time, whiteware produced before 1783 was also used (without a year number). There was a second delivery as early as 1792/93, and in the 19th century the Imperial Porcelain Manufactory in Russia produced a second batch. The inventory number belongs to the Hermitage in St Petersburg, the Russian letters refer to items from the Court Marshal's Cabinet.
