In 1909, the first volume ‘The Chattering Heart and other novellas’ by Edgar Allan Poe was published by Georg Müller, followed by seven more volumes until 1920. Alfred Kubin was commissioned to illustrate these novellas. The present sheet ‘Haus Usher’ serves as the introduction to the story ‘The Fall of the House of Usher.’ The ominous fate that will unfold within the old walls is already reflected in this artistically outstanding depiction of the house, embodying all its eerie drama.
