Archduchess Maria Christina (1858–1929), sister of Archduke Friedrich, married King Alfonso XII of Spain in 1879 and served as Regent of Spain from 1885 to 1902. To accommodate her frequent visits to Vienna, her brother, Archduke Friedrich, arranged for the furnishing of the so-called "Spanish Apartment" within the Albertina. The present piece of furniture may have originated from the furnishings of this "Spanish Apartment." Following the expropriation of the Albertina in 1918, Archduke Friedrich took all movable property with him into exile in Hungary, considering them his private possessions.
