The goal of Robert Rauschenberg's project, the Rauschenberg Overseas Culture Interchange (ROCI), was to promote the politics of détente between America and the Soviet Union through art and friendship. In 1989, Rauschenberg became the first American artist since World War II to be granted a solo exhibition in the Soviet Union. For his exhibition in Moscow, he created the series “Soviet/American Array”, a set of seven large scale prints.
