In early 1956 Picasso worked on a series of white earthenware clay dishes in larger scale, which he showed to the British art historian, collector and connaiseur Douglas Cooper during his visit to Picasso’s villa “La Californie’. The conversation about these ceramic dishes led both friends towards the opulent gold and silver platters of the 16th and 17th century made in Augsburg or Venice. This comparison led Picasso to the question how the ceramic dishes would look like in silver.
Cooper recommended the well renowned silversmith Francois Hugo (1899 – 1981) for this task and made the contact between Picasso and Hugo. Enthusiastic about the result of a first silver dish, Picasso commissioned Francois Hugo to carry out further dishes. Until 1961 Hugo finished 24 silver dishes, which Picasso kept as a personal 'treasure' and never showed to the public. Only in 1967 Picasso and Hugo decided to run an edition of 20 numbered copies..
