The genre painter Adolf Lüben was born in 1837 in St. Petersburg to German parents and began his artistic training in 1853 under Eduard Holbein at the Academy in Berlin. He subsequently pursued further studies in Antwerp and Düsseldorf. After completing his education, Lüben first worked in Berlin, and from 1876 settled in Munich, where he encountered the Piloty school. There he broadened his repertoire to include depictions of Bavarian and Tyrolean folk life. His art achieved wide circulation through wood engravings and photographic reproductions published in contemporary journals. Lüben died in Munich in 1905.
