Morestel, Maison Ravier, Georges Rouault. Vision sur la condition humaine, 29 March – 14 June 2015

Georges Rouault’s unmistakable painting style combines bold, luminous colors with dark contours, giving his figures a striking presence and depth. This characteristic style is often associated with the aesthetics of stained glass windows – an influence from his early apprenticeship in a glass workshop at the Notre-Dame Cathedral. Rouault is regarded as one of the most distinctive artistic personalities of French Modernism.

The circus was a recurring theme in Rouault’s work – a realm of performance, but also of profound humanity. His clowns, acrobats, and dancers embody not only melancholy but also dignity, pride, and vitality. Beneath the mask of entertainment lies a deep compassion for those who dedicate their lives to art.

In Parade (Cirque), several performers meet in a moment of poised stillness. The warm reds, yellows, and greens bring the scene to life, while the bold outlines lend the figures a sense of structure and presence. Rouault transforms the circus into a metaphor for human strength and sensitivity – a quietly luminous image of dignity and hope.
