Kumpf is an artist who reconciles rather than idealises. His cheerfulness is meant to be taken seriously, and his idylls possess the vitality of abundant fertility. Kumpf’s landscapes are not mere backdrops for human figures, nor are his people decorative elements within the landscape. Some take root in the earth, others touch it fleetingly, diligently or lazily. Everything has something to say to everything else, and even silence becomes a form of dialogue.
