Dorotheum Review 2024

Dorotheum looks back on an outstanding auction year. The auction house’s international focus is crucial to its success. Bidders from almost 90 countries competed for the works of art.

Dorotheum set sensational world records in the higher-priced segment over the course of the year. Andy Warhol's ten-part series ‘Ten Portraits of Jews of the Twentieth Century’ from 1980 topped the list of contemporary art. 1.09 million euros is a record price for this series.

Double the previous record was set for a gestural-abstract painting for an untitled work by the late-discovered world-class Austrian painter Martha Jungwirth (€ 520,000). A world record price of 700.000 euro was also realized for the last portrait by Max Oppenheimer. Alongside Oppenheimer, works by Schiele and Klimt were also highly prized. Works by Alexey Jawlensky, Victor Brauner and Francis Picabia attracted high bids.

In the Old Masters category, the painting pair of the ‘Christ crowned with thorns and The Virgin’ by Perugino achieved a sensational result of 842,000 euros and thus a world record for a work by the great Renaissance painter.
