Cigler Václav (1929)

Well
clear glass, fused in a mould and polished in acid, metal bowl with vacuum metal-plated glass, 13 x 59 cm

Exhibited: Václav Cigler and his graduates, Mánes Prague 2003
Václav Cígler, National Gallery Prague, 2004

After studying at the Glassmaking Secondary School in Nový Bor, he studied in the studio of prof. Kaplický at the VŠUP in Prague, where he graduated in 1957. Between the years 1965 and 1979, he led the studio he founded, focusing on glass in architecture at the VŠVU in Bratislava. To a certain extent, this focus is characteristic of his artistic intent. At the end of the 1960s he got the idea of getting rid of all historicisms, which entailed finding and using optical glass, which he started to use in his work. Characteristic for Cígler is finding basic shapes for his objects, their character and relationship to the surrounding world, using minimal artistic means.

The work on offer, Well, is a gallery piece in his work, the essence of his philosophical approach to creation and life. A variation of the Well piece is part of the collection of the Eastern Bohemian Muzeum in Pardubice.

Quotations:
“glass is a material of light, the material of changes and overlaps...”
“I don’t depict - I limit and evoke”
