- a tandem that tries to overcome its limited manoeuvrability
- only marginally longer than a regular bicycle
- the rear bottom bracket spindle passes through the rear wheel hub without driving it
- the power is diver ted via a chain to the 'captain's' transmission
- from there diver ted again down the right-hand side to the rear wheel hub
- important: the captain must already be seated when the stoker mounts
- the type of short tandem design dates from as early as the 1880s
