Hochinteressantes und ausführliches Beileidschreiben an Erzherzogin Sophie von Österreich, die Mutter des Maximilian über die letzten Ereignisse in Mexiko und über dessen Hinrichtung: "To Your Imperial and Royal Highness, Arch Ducess Sophia of Austria: Madam: In as much a I, an American citizen, was one of the legal advisers of His Majesty Maximilian late Emperor of Mexiko, Your Highness much beloved son, during his imprisement in Queretaro, I, in union with others of my Countrymen here have thought that it would be some consolation to Your Highness, in the hour of sorrow and affliction, to hear something from me relative to your son in his last days. I can say, Madam, in sincerity and truth that His Mayesty was in every act gallant and honorable in the highest degree. The fair an illustrious name of the ancient house of Habsburg received no tarrish house of him. When consulting with me one day, in regard to the Course to be pursued in his defence he said: "Honor befor life" (...) During his imprisement his physical strenght become reduced, but his mental faculties were strong and his spirit that of a true soldier (...) By every principle of law and justice, His Mayesty's life should have been spared. The deed that deprived him of it, was Murder. It was dictat- ed by ignorance an a savage spirit of revenge (...) And may the Great King of Kings who ruleth upon that Throne which is overall earthly thrones, give you that strength of mind which will enable Your Highness to bear in meekness and humility this great affliction. And when all there is of earth shall have passed away, may all the family of the house of Habsburg unite around the Celestial Throne blessed by eternal happines (...) Frederic Hall, of San Francisco, California".
