STRONG SIGNAL IN FAVOUR OF CONTEMPORARY ART - Fontana & Co: Strong showing of Contemporary Art at Dorotheum in the first half of 2014.

(17.06.2014)

The successful first two quarters of 2014 saw Dorotheum, German-speaking Europe’s largest auction house, regularly achieve top prices as well as several new world records. The triumphant evening auction of Contemporary Art in May turned into the most successful such event in Dorotheum history.

On 20th May 2014, Lucio Fontana’s 100 x 81 cm large-format „Concetto Spaziale“ was sold for 1,08 million Euro, a new world record for a painting from the artist’s “Baroque” period during the nineteen-fifties. A black „Concetto Spaziale“ was sold for 653,800 Euro. 573,300 Euro for „Zone Riflesse“ by Paolo Scheggi marks an important world record for this artist. Works by Enrico Castellani, Agostino Bonalumi, and Dadamaino likewise achieved top prices at this auction. Sean Scully’s large-format „Lucia“ was successfully sold for 934,230 Euro, while a conceptual piece by Ilya Kabakov, „Girl with Scale, 1972“ was knocked down for 366,300 Euro.

International and Austrian Modern Art also found itself in high demand among collectors. Oskar Kokoschka’s “Lace maker” found a new owner for 215,380 Euro, Rudolf Hausner’s „Multi-coloured Fool’s Cap“ for 164,780 Euro, the second-best result for this artist’s work, while the 146,700 Euro paid for the Futurist „Medicante e Tabarin“ by Tullio Crali mark a new world record price for a painting by this artist.
Dorotheum continues to register significant international interest in Old Master Paintings. Of the finest aristocratic provenance, a „Holy Family with St Anne and Infant St John“ from the studio of Sir Peter Paul Rubens went to a bidder personally attending the auction, for 503,030 Euro. Emil Jakob Schindler’s sun-drenched „Garden at Plankenberg“, a major work of Austrian atmospheric Impressionism („Stimmungsimpressionismus“), saw bidding climb to 183,300 Euro at the auction of 19th Century Paintings.

A record 134,500 Euro was paid for a riding hat once belonging to Empress Elisabeth in the Imperial Court Memorabilia category, marking a new record high for a single object sold at this annual auction.

The Asian Art category celebrated a successful debut: A rare set of eight lapis-lazuli plates engraved on both sides from the Qing Dynasty, late 18th/19th century, made it into the top-10 list for the first two quarters of 2014 with a final bid of 268,700 Euro.

The Jewellery and Watches category is still one of the most successful auction categories while Art Nouveau and Silver also continue to be in high demand, with Russian silver in particular selling far beyond estimates.

„The corporate strategy of increasing our international presence and extending our selection of Contemporary Art has proved itself highly successful and will be developed further“, to quote managing director Martin Böhm.
