PRIOR TO THE AUCTION

Catalogue and Internet
Find out what is in the sale:
There is an online catalogue for each auction.
Printed catalogues are also available for over a hundred sales each year.  You are welcome to register for a catalogue subscription, or to request catalogues individually. Also try our myDOROTHEUM online search service and and enjoy the possibility of managing your interests and absentee bids autonomously.

Presale Exhibitions
All objects can be viewed in the presale exhibition prior to the auction. Each item is described in detail by our experts. Do not hesitate to contact us if you have any questions.

Price
Each lot has either an estimate or a starting price. The estimate represents the opinion of the experts about the range for which a lot may sell at auction. The starting price is the amount at which the auction begins, and lies between half the low estimate and the low estimate.

THE AUCTION

Bidding is Easy

Bidding in Person

After registering, you can collect a bidding paddle on the day of the auction. If you do not have a customer number yet, a valid photo identification will suffice. For auctions with a printed catalogue, each lot will be called out in order of catalogue listing.
For auctions without a printed catalogue, please inform the auction team of the multi-digit lot number of your item of interest before the auction begins. Only in this case will the lot be called out during the sale.  You will find the object number in the online catalogue, or in the object description in the presale exhibition.
You can bid by holding up the paddle until acknowledged by the auctioneer. In general, the auctioneer will conduct the bidding in increments of approximately 10% higher than the previous bid (bid increments). The auctioneer accepts the highest bid by announcing “sold” and ringing the bell.

Absentee Bids

If you are unable to attend the auction in person, absentee bids can be submitted up to 24 hours prior to the start of the sale. You will find the necessary form online, in the catalogue, or in the presale exhibition. The absentee bid informs us of your purchase limit, up to which we will bid on your behalf. If no other higher bids are offered, we guarantee that your final bid will be accepted at a price below your upper limit.

Telephone Bids

You can also bid over the phone for lots with a minimum starting price of € 300 per object. Let us know in writing, by telephone or with an online telephone bid, which objects you are interested in, and ensure that you can be reached during the auction. We will call you directly from the auction room, when your lot of interest comes up for sale, so that you can bid over the phone as the auction takes place.

AFTER THE AUCTION

Payment and Collection
Please note that the hammer price is subject to a buyer’s premium and discretionary sales tax.
Payment can be made directly at the cashier, once payment has been made we can issue a receipt and an issue slip allowing you to take the purchased object with you immediately.
You can also make payment via bank transfer if you prefer.
If you provide us with your email address, we will inform you if your bid was successful.
Also, we will be happy to organise a specialised transport for your item on your behalf.

Buyer’s Premium

Please note that the buyer’s premium and legal VAT will be added to the highest bid or hammer price. If the item is subject to differential taxation, which is normally the case, together these will amount to 25%. Items that are subject to other forms of taxation are explicitly indicated in the catalogue, for instance with the marks “+” or “-” for items subject to full taxation.

Sales of original works can be additionally subject to a royalty payment surcharge of max. 4%.
