Van der Helst numbers among the most outstanding Dutch portraitists. W. Bernt writes about him: "He was the favourite painter of Amsterdam councillors and high-ranking officials, whom he rendered true to reality. His later period is marked by a more colourful palette and richer contrasts, with sharper distinctions between dark and light tones; compared to his earlier compositions, which are calm and sober, his depictions became more elegant and posed, in accordance with contemporary taste…”
