Contemporary Art is one of Dorotheum’s key sectors. The Contemporary Art Week, which takes place twice a year with major auctions of international and Austrian art, offers an outstanding selection for collectors. Top international prices are achieved on a regular basis.
A large number of artistic movements is represented. Ranging from Abstract Expressionism, Minimalism and Conteptual Art to Kinetic Art, Op and Pop Art as well as Graffiti Art. The works on sale include paintings and drawings, works on paper as well as sculptures and installations by a large number of renowned artists. The world record price of 1,367,800 euros was one of the particular highlights of this department. for Maria Lassnig’s Wilde Tiere sind gefährdet (Wild Animals Are Endangered), the highest price ever realised for a work by an Austrian contemporary artist.
Just as important and successful are the works of German artists such as Martin Kippenberger, Heinz Mack and Günther Uecker. The international stars who are an integral part of the auctions also include Jean Dubuffet, Ilya Kabakov, Anish Kapoor, Yayoi Kusama, Georges Mathieu and Andy Warhol. Italian art is especially important: names such as Lucio Fontana, Piero Manzoni, Alighiero Boetti, Emilio Vedova, Enrico Castellani and Mario Schifano regularly fetch top prices.
