Old Master Paintings

Dorotheum’s Old Master Paintings Department has distinguished itself at auction, smashing a number of national and European records. Frans Francken’s Man Choosing between Virtue and Vice memorably realised €7,022,300 at auction, claiming the title of highest price ever paid for an old master in continental Europe, as well as the highest hammer price for a painting in Austria. October of 2014 saw Frans Verbeeck’s monumental The Mocking of Human Follies sell for €3,035,000, a world record price for a work by the Flemish artist, and in the 2015 Spring auction Dorotheum was delighted with the significant prices realised by numerous works, notably those by the Brueghel dynasty of painters. This well respected department has enjoyed further highlights including the world record result for a work by Guido Cagnacci and other important results for works by Federico Barocci, Giovanni Battista Salvi (called Il Sassoferrato), Paris Bordon, Guercino, Melchior de Hondecoeter, Jan Lievens, Willem Kalf, Francesco Guardi, and Antonio Joli.

Auctions are held twice a year in the historic Palais Dorotheum in Vienna. The subject matter on offer is diverse, including landscapes, genre paintings, history paintings, portraits, and still lifes, with a variety of different schools and periods represented.
