The Old Master paintings department at Dorotheum has obtained numerous world record results including the outstanding record price of 7,022,300 euros for Frans Francken’s masterpiece Man Choosing between Virtue and Vice which broke several records at once: the highest price ever paid for an Old Master painting in continental Europe and the highest hammer price for a painting in Austria. In October 2014 the monumental painting, The Mocking of Human Follies, by the Flemish painter Frans Verbeeck sold for 3,035,000 euros, reaching a world record price for a work by the artist and one of the highest prices ever reached at an auction in Austria. In the 2015 spring auction, Dorotheum again demonstrated its pre-eminence in the field of old master paintings: numerous pictures, including works executed by the Brueghel dynasty of painters, achieved significant prices. The world record result for a work by Guido Cagnacci and important results for Federico Barocci, Giovan Battista Salvi called il Sassoferrato, Paris Bordon, Guercino, Melchior de Hondecoeter, Jan Lievens, Willem Kalf, Francesco Guardi and Antonio Joli are among the further highlights of results achieved by one of Dorotheum’s most respected sale categories.
Our important auctions take place twice a year in the historic setting of the Palais Dorotheum in Vienna. The selection of works is varied, including landscapes and genre scenes, history paintings, portraits and still lifes, with many schools of painting represented from a variety of periods.
