Beaume 1821-1911 Paris

Felix Ziem was born on 26 February 1821 in Beaune (Burgundy, France) and came to painting in a roundabout way. He studied architecture in Dijon and also worked in this profession for a few years. Initially, he only painted in his spare time and on his numerous journeys, which took him all over Europe and later to Egypt and North Africa. In 1849, some of his works were shown for the first time at the Paris Salon. They met with great enthusiasm from the art world and the success and recognition for his works enabled him to exhibit at the Paris Salon and thus in the French art world time and again over the following years. From 1860 onwards, Felix Ziem lived in Montmartre in Paris and in Nice. He loved nature and especially the sea, which became the main protagonists in his painting. His landscape paintings were unique and made him one of the most important representatives of the Barbizon School (France from 1830, with Gustave Courbet, Jean Baptiste Camille Corot, Charles-Francois Daubigny, Alexandre-Gabriel Decamps, among others). He chose a small port near Marseille, Martigues, as his favourite place, along with Venice, to which he dedicated a large part of his paintings. In 1908, a museum was built in the southern French port city of Martigues, the Musée Ziem. More than 8,000 of his works, including paintings, drawings, photographs, sculptures and various objects, such as his numerous sketchbooks, are kept and exhibited there. Felix Ziem received numerous prizes and awards during his lifetime, and in 1910 he was privileged to see the world-famous Louvre purchase his paintings. Even today, Felix Ziem’s works are in great demand and repeatedly achieve sensational results at Dorotheum’s auctions of 19th-century paintings.
