The Pictorial
(Volume XIII, after Monday, 18 February 1924)

What is the aim of modern art?
The pictorial.
That is, that which is ‘formed’. The creative. The intention, the so-called allegorical in front of, or behind, the appearance.
Whereas Impressionism set as its main goal the detail in front of nature, the fragment (similar in a way to the subordination in front of facts, knowledge, science), people today seek a totality from the detail of what is seen each time. Something that is suitable for many, for all. The totality = they seek a landscape in which what is perceived – (perhaps) just for a moment, by seeing, experiencing, feeling – is expressed and to which a total work, all work, all study, all love and all forgotten things are applied.
The winter landscape – the white of the snow. How it outshines the dark places – only why? (it outshines them, when these dark places are too few in number). The quest for broad, calm light and areas of shadow. Which does not mean that shadow engenders sky through sun, but rather light from snow masses. Shadows – deep covered surfaces. In this way in winter the clouds lie on the earth.
Light falls on the ground and remains lying on it. The fallen snow therefore has a modelling effect – the earth goes upwards.
