“I felt indifferent towards those attitudes, perhaps because I had travelled through Europe since I was a child, my father was as restless as I was and travelled between the United States and Europe with his family…therefore whilst friends of mine in America who painted had the tendency to attend schools or academies (even though they were against academies) I freed myself as a person, and also in my art which I wanted to keep as open as possible so as to avoid becoming absolutist.
