Luigi Nono

Luigi Nono - 19th Century Paintings

(Fusina/Venice 1850–1918)
Study for “il funerale di un bambino”, signed, inscribed and dated Al Comm. Emidio Chiaradia affettuosamente L. IXo 1902, oil on paper, 42.5 x 27.5 cm, framed, (GG)

Provenance:
Acquired directly from the artist by the great-grandfather of the current owner;
By inheritance to the current owner;
Private Collection, Italy.

Having completed his studies at the Venetian Academy, Luigi Nono lived for a number of years with his parents in Sacile, but in 1879 he returned to Venice, where he lived and worked in Palazzo Dolfin.

The present oil figures of modest dimensions are studies for “Il funerale di un bambino”, which might have been purchased by the Czar of Russia.

Luigi Nono dedicated himself to the everyday scenes of popular Venetian life, like his friend and fellow student Giacomo Favretto. He depicted the Venetian character and his human qualities such as in the present lots.

He shows two humble little girls sombrely following a coffin. They are covered by a shawl. It is a spontaneous work and demonstrates Nono’s vigorous and confident way of painting.

These two studies are dedicated to Emidio Chiaradia, an Italian deputy and friend of the artist, and to his wife Elvira Mayr.
