The leading specialist in Moldovan iconography, Dr Sorin Iftimi, is of the opinion that the present portrait may very likely depict Alexander II Mavrocordat Firaris (1754–1819), who was Moldovan hospodar between 1785 and 1786. His political life exerted a considerable influence on Russo-Turkish relations under Catherine II.

Крупный знаток молдавской иконографии д-р Сорин Ифтими предполагает, что на портрете с большой долей вероятности изображен Александр II Маврокордат «Фирарис» («Беглец») (1754 - 1819), господарь Молдавского княжества в 1785 – 86 гг. Его политическая биография сыграла важнейшую роль в развитии русско-турецких отношений в годы правления Екатерины II.
