Lega (also Warega or Rega), Dem. Rep. of Congo: a headed figure made of ivory with a torso-shaped body, two rings at the bottom and dot-in-circle decoration.
A Lega ivory figure from eastern Congo (cf also cat. no. 166) with a typical Lega head: a heart-shaped face that cups towards the middle, coffee bean eyes, a long nose, small mouth and pointed chin. The body widens to form an oval, is highly stylised, and finishes underneath in two offset rings. The body of the ivory figure features decoration comprising four vertical rows of incised dot-in-circle motifs (characteristic of Lega art). This charming piece has slight cracks due to age on all sides, and a speckled honey-coloured patina, as usual with older ivory. Good condition, no damage.
Height: 10 cm; diameter: 3 cm x 3.5 cm (below). First third of the 20th century or earlier. (ME) ASA
Provenance: South African private collection.
Lit.: see cat. no. 166.
