Lot No. 233

Mixed lot (2 items), Burma (Myanmar): two long, old tattoo needles, with ‘Nat spirits’ inserted on top.

Mixed lot (2 items), Burma (Myanmar): two long, old tattoo needles, with ‘Nat spirits’ inserted on top. - Tribal Art

Two Burmese tattoo needles, long, round and made of metal (brass, partly copper). On the front they end in slit arrowheads. With needles such as these the Burmese would be tattooed with ‘protective’ tattoos under the skin. The tattoos took the form of writing or pictorial drawings and symbols. On each tattoo needle a female ‘Nat spirit’ sits above. She is responsible for the success of effective and protective tattoos. The figures are made of bronze, executed with ‘waste mould’ casting and are inserted above into the handle of the tattoo needle. These benevolent ‘spirits’ belong to the ‘cult of the Nat’, the second (and oldest) folk religion of the Burmese, along with Buddhism. Two interesting, old objects. Without damage.
Height: 50 cm and 34 cm. (ME)
