Burma: a Buddha made of wood, sitting on a two-tiered lotus flower throne. With the remains of original gilding. Style: Mandalay. - Tribal Art

A Burmese Buddha figure made of wood, carved in the typical Mandalay style and sitting in the ‘earth-touching gesture’ (‘Bhumisparsa Mudra') on a high, angular and two-stepped lotus flower throne. The Buddha wears the simple monk’s robe, a hairstyle made up of detailed studs, above an upwardly protuberant ‘Ushinisha’ (the ‘wisdom bump’ on his head) and on top of that a round, flat, upwardly pointing ‘flame’. It is overall a very good and neatly crafted sacred statue. It has been painted a black -brown and displays visible remains of an original gilding. There are only some age and weather related signs of erosion to the plinth and on the reverse side of the lotus flower throne. With an attached seal for the approved export of this object from Burma.
Height: 53 cm; width: c. 22 cm.
