Lot No. 47

Ashanti, Ghana: an Ashanti stool in extraordinary form: with a barrel as central support.

Ashanti, Ghana: an Ashanti stool in extraordinary form: with a barrel as central support. - Tribal Art

A typical stool of the Ashanti with an unusual central support: it is carved from a piece of light-coloured wood, has a wide, rectangular and curved seat, and a rectangular base plate. Unusual in this Ashanti stool is the construction of its central support: on the base plate rests a flat, hollow chest, with a lozenge-shaped openwork recess on both long sides. Both lozenges display a ring with a hole in the middle. On top of this rectangular chest lies a large, rounded barrel, below the seat. It is carved in deep relief. All is crafted from a single piece of wood. An old area of loss and three old cracks to one side of the linear decorated base plate. Otherwise no damage. A visibly old, completely smooth and partially shiny usage patina (seat surface).
Height: 46 cm (on both sides); 38 cm (in the middle); width: 61 cm (base plate); 59 cm (seat); width of the seat: c. 27.5 cm (on both sides); 25 cm (in the middle).
First half of the 20th century. (ME)
