Josef Bauer had both an agricultural and artistic education. However, it was the moment of illusion in painting, which only relies on two dimensions of the surface and can only create a third through the deception of foreshortening, that motivated him to break away from this troublesome delusion of the senses. Therefore, in the mid 60s Bauer made a move towards sculptural arrangements and found himself expanding into rural and natural art until he finally came to conceptual art. This development was independent from the international art scene and was due, in part, to Bauer’s own resources and, in part, to his education. Bauer was the national pole vault champion several times and he was also a successful decathlete. This sport influenced his development as a prolific artist in three ways...
