... My dear Walde, I was also here in the Künstlerhaus. I enjoyed your paintings very much. You have really done me an honour, since I recommended you to the rotten ungrateful Viennese artists’ rabble. I entrusted you to such and such, and then I sent telegrams from Innsbruck and Kitzbühel, and now I am happy to see that your pictures beat the lot of them. The Alpine pasture in the snow is very well drawn, only the snow is a bit too dirty; it looks as if it has a layer of factory soot on top of it. The other large painting with snow and sun is fantastic, but it belongs in a black, broader frame, not a gold or silver one. My dear chap, you’ve captured very well the light and shadows of the mountains, peaks, and hills. The ‘anatomy’, the ‘perspective’ of the aether, the azure blue, the air, the atmosphere - it’s all very good indeed - only in the shade of the trees are you too one-sided, too monotonous, believe me, dear fellow, shade doesn’t have to be treated in such a poster-like fashion. Shade also has light and dark, perspective and ‘anatomy’ - go into this more deeply. You’re on the right course. You’re really great, my friend. It’s quite a miracle, old chap that the snow that you paint, with the sweat with which you paint, doesn’t melt! ...
