Karl Hofer endeavoured to preserve the classical ideal within modernity, with its own language of forms. To this end, Hofer did not strive for aesthetic perfection; instead, he wanted to investigate, by „describing inherent forms“, the essence of things and lend them expression. The assertion, „art does not reproduce the visible, but makes visible“ is applicable to him, even and although he critically evaluated this statement of Paul Klee in relation to its employment in the context of abstraction.
