Lot No. 741

Christo (Javacheff Christo)

(born in Gabrovo, Bulgaria in 1935 - lives and works in New York)
Ocean front - project for covering the bay at Ragged point as Ocean Drive, New Port East passage, 1974, inscribed, signed and dated Christo 1974, collage and fabric on paper on panel, 70 x 56 cm, framed

Provenance:
Studio Marconi, Milan
European Private Collection

Just like their work, Christo and Jeanne Claude do not fall easily into any of the usual artistic categories. Neither painters nor sculptors, or perhaps a bit of both, they are simply themselves. Christo’s skill in drawing and his practice of doing innumerable preparatory studies (the legacy of his academic training as a young man) allow the couple’s original vision to be brought to life and also demonstrate his qualifications as an artist in the traditional sense. Nonetheless, the characteristic sign that marks him out as a modern artist is his use of a type of collage inspired by Cubism to bring together drawings, textiles, topographic maps and photographs. And he has worked in this way from the very beginning of his career.
Albert Elsen, La libertà di essere Christo e Jeanne-Claude, in the catalogue of the exhibition held at The Art Gallery of New York, South Wales, Sidney 1990
