The collaged, digital inkjet print in eleven colours is printed on white cardboard and mounted on a larger white pasteboard.
Gerhard Richter marked in pencilled arrows the image area that he wished, and provided the original measurements of the strip picture to be created later at the bottom left, „for 110 x 250 cm“. The planned work, however, was never realised, so that only the present design exists as a unique item.

„The design came into being based on numerous excerpts of the oil painting ‘Abstraktes Bild’ [Abstract Painting] from 1990, which has the number 724-4 in the catalogue raisonné. The motif of the painting was dissected on the computer into 4096 vertical segments, which were reproduced in countless mirror images, until a geometric pattern repeat of long, horizontal stripes resulted. Gerhard Richter then cut up these stripes, which were printed on card, into segments of different sizes, and subsequently placed them together anew in the form of a collage on card.
The current design, therefore, shows how the artist proceeded in the production of his various „Strip“ unique items; this makes the work appear art-historically remarkable and instructive. Fourteen additional examples of comparable designs are located in the Städtische Galerie im Lenbachhaus in Munich.” (Certificate by Hubertus Butin, Berlin, August 2016).
In the exhibition “Gerhard Richter – Atlas” in spring 2013 some of these designs were shown in the Kunstbau building of the Lenbachhaus in Munich. Adapted from the collaged prints of Gerhard Richter, strip pictures up to ten metres long are formed according to the artist’s precise instructions.
