Friedensreich Hundertwasser* - Modern and Contemporary Prints

(Vienna 1928-2000 Pacific Ocean, on board the QE II) "Die Flucht des Dalai-Lama" (The Flight of the Dalai Lama), 1959, colour lithograph, signed, edition of approx. 1,800 of which approx. 150 signed at a later date, trimmed, glued and folded as intended, 28 x 118 cm, mounted on board, framed, Koschatzky 414, (EW)

“Formerly an independent state, the People’s Republic of China occupied Tibet in 1951. 1959 saw a revolution against the invaders (...), forcing the ecclesiastical leader of this monastery state to flee in haste. The Dalai Lama became a martyr to the overpowering force of Communism. Carl László (...) published a Dalai Lama issue of the Panderma magazine which was intended to include an original Hundertwasser lithograph on the flight of the Dalai Lama. The artist designed the sheet so that, when sliced in half, with the lower part glued to the upper left and folded in landscape format, it could be issued together with the magazine.”
(Walter Koschatzky, Friedensreich Hundertwasser. Das vollständige druckgraphische Werk 1951-1986, Orell Füssli, published by Zürich and Schwäbisch Hall, 1986, p.50)
