Josef Willroider

Josef Willroider - 19th Century Paintings

(Villach 1838–1915 Munich)
A vast landscape with a washerwoman, signed, dated and inscribed J. Willroider Ddf 1874,
oil on canvas, 103 x 152 cm, framed, (Rei)

Provenance:
Private Collection, Germany.

Josef Willroider moved to Düsseldorf in 1866. Although it is not clear what sparked this relocation, it may have been the good reputation of the Düsseldorf Academy where, unlike in Munich, landscape painting played a large role. Oswald and Andreas Achenbach, with their colourful depictions of southern and northern landscapes, exerted great influence on Willroider. Josef Willroider was a constant presence at exhibitions in Düsseldorf alongside the “Malkasten” (lit. “paint box”) association of artists. The Malkasten group was formed in 1848. It gathered together the more progressive artists within the Düsseldorf school of landscape painters, who set themselves apart from the traditionalism of the academies and preferred modern plein air painting in the French style.
