Franz Richard Unterberger

Franz Richard Unterberger - 19th Century Paintings

(Innsbruck 1838–1902 Neuilly-sur-Seine)
“Abendglühen des Schlern bei Bozen” [Sunset on the Schlern mountain near Bolzano], on the reverse in the artist’s own hand titled and inscribed F. R. Unterberger, signed F. R. Unterberger,
oil on panel, 42 x 58 cm, framed, (Rei)

“This picture, one of the earliest works of F. R. Unterberger I have encountered, is, in terms of colour and composition, an extraordinarily successful example of painting by this native of Tirol who emigrated to Belgium. The signature gives the date as 1863/64. Its key focus is very clearly the depiction of the Schlern mountain range in the glowing light of the evening. The treatment of the mountain stream and the sky, which were later specialities of the painter, still shows signs of weakness here. As a whole, this earliest of his works is a charming mood-painting, able to inspire feelings of warmth in anybody familiar with the Ladin region in South Tyrol. The picture, which I have available in jpeg format, is undoubtedly authentic.”
